ENGLISH TIP 2
Think in English No 65
Messy Thinking
Research from Pennsylvania State University suggests that a messy home can lead to chaotic thinking. Psychologists already knew that there was a link between cramped, noisy, messy living conditions and lower intelligence in children. However, the problem has been to separate genetic and socioeconomic factors from environmental influences since the homes of more affluent, better educated parents tend to be less chaotic. The researchers quantified the influence of genetic factors by comparing data from identical twins to that of non-identical twins. After poring over all the results they concluded that a messy home does reduce children's cognitive skills.
messy = chaotic, untidy
lead to = cause
cramped = confined
affluent = prosperous, rich
poring over (pore over) = study carefully
